چکیده

The nature of Low-ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs) has been an open question for a long time. We study the properties of LINERs from several different aspects. The LINERs are found to consist of two different categories that can be clearly separated in the traditional BPT diagrams, especially in the [O I]/Hα vs. [O III]/Hβ diagram. LINERs with high [O I]/Hα ratios (population I) differ from ones with low ratios (population II) in several properties. Broad emission lines are only identified in the spectra of population I LINERs. While only the population II LINERs show luminous infrared emission and occurrence of core-collapse supernovae in the host. Combining these results with the known distribution of stellar populations not only suggests that the two populations have different line excitation mechanisms, but also implies that they are at different evolutionary stages. LINERs and their Physical Mechanisms

I review the basic properties of low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), as well as the main ionization mechanisms thus far proposed for them. There is substantial heterogeneity among LINERs, especially those with extended kpc-scale emission. An extensive survey by Ho, Filippenko, & Sargent quantifies with unprecedented accuracy the optical emission-line intensity ratios in the n...

Seyfert-type Dependences of Narrow Emission-line Ratios and Physical Properties of High-ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions in Seyfert Galaxies

In order to examine how narrow emission-line flux ratios depend on the Seyfert type, we compiled various narrow emission-line flux ratios of 355 Seyfert galaxies from the literature. We present in this paper that the intensity of the high-ionization emission lines, [Fe vii]λ6087, [Fe x]λ6374 and [Ne v]λ3426, tend to be stronger in Seyfert 1 galaxies than in Seyfert 2 galaxies. In addition to th...

A Spitzer Spectroscopic Survey of Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions: Characterization of the Central Source

We have conducted a comprehensive mid-IR spectroscopic investigation of 67 Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Regions (LINERs) using archival observations from the high resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using the [NeV] 14 and 24μm lines as active galactic nuclei (AGN) diagnostics, we detect active black holes in 39% of the galaxies in our sa...

We present a comprehensive study to determine if the LINER/H II region transition spectrum in NGC 4569 can be generated solely by photoionization by the nuclear starburst. A review of the multiwavelength data from the literature reveals no additional sources that contribute to the ionization. We find that the young starburst dominating the UV emission is distinct from the nuclear population of ...

The Nuclear Region of Low Luminosity Flat Radio Spectrum Sources ⋆ I . Stellar Content

In this work we have examined the spectroscopic properties of a sample of 19 optically bright, low luminosity Flat Radio Spectrum (LL FRS) sources. Our study focuses on the properties of their host galaxies, namely the nuclear stellar populations and dust content. In the optical — spectral region covered by our data — the objects in the sample are mainly dominated by the host galaxy starlight, ...
